What it is like

Fishing tackle was made in huge variety through the twentieth century, much of it by small workshops, and a great deal of it survives in sheds and tackle boxes. Collectors look for hand-painted lures, early reels and split-cane rods.

The pleasure is in the finding and the finding out. Common pieces cost a few dollars each in a mixed lot, and each one comes with a small research project attached.

Your first project: one reel, cleaned and identified

Step 1 Find it

Flea markets, estate sales and the boxes under the tables.

Step 2 Identify it

Look for a maker's name and model stamped on the foot or side plate, then look it up.

Step 3 Clean it lightly

Brush off dirt, wipe with a barely oiled cloth. Leave the patina.

Step 4 Record it

Where it came from, what you paid and what you learned.

Why people quit

  • Over-cleaningPolishing removes the finish and most of the value. Less is more.
  • Buying everythingA theme, one maker or one type, makes a collection instead of a pile.
  • Paying for storiesBuy the object, not the seller's tale about it.
